Latin Via Proverbs: Home - Start

This wiki website accompanies the Lulu book, Latin Via Proverbs: 4000 Proverbs, Mottoes and Sayings for Students of Latin. The proverbs in the book are put into groups according to grammar, based on the noun declensions and also by the verb conjugations, according to their tense, voice and mood. (Note that I have not included here the additional 200 Latin words and phrases in the back of the book which have now become part of the English language, e.g. agenda, deficit, Aquarius, etc.)

At this wiki, you will find here is the 4000 proverbs, group by group, along with a Search Engine so that you can find a specific proverb, and identify its group number and proverb number. This will make it easy for you to look the proverb up in the book in order to get its grammatical category. You can find a link to the Search in both tabs of the sidebar, on the right-hand side of the page.

In addition, so many people have written to ask me for a Study Guide to the proverbs, with English translations and information about sources, that I am gradually adding a Study Guide, group by group. You can see the latest additions to the Study Guides at the Latin Via Proverbs blog.

I'm also creating audio files for each proverb. You can hear the latest additions to the Study Guides at the Audio Latin blog. You can read about a new Latin proverb each day at the Audio Latin Proverbs blog, or you can take a quick look at the recent posts at that blog, using the "Recent Activity" tab in the Sidebar of this wiki. Using Wheelock's Latin textbook? I've created a listing of the order of topics presented in Wheelock, and how this corresponds to the groups in Latin Via Proverbs: Wheelock and Latin Via Proverbs.

Finally, you can also add a "Latin Proverb of the Day" to your website, using a simple javascript. You can learn more about that at the SchoolhouseWidgets.com website. Here is the proverb of the day for today:
